The story

Why build this?

Boda Moja is built by Salim, a full-stack software developer living and working in Kilifi. Like everyone here, he's spent years negotiating boda fares at the stage — a different price depending on the day, the weather, and how far from home you look.

Boda bodas are how Kilifi actually moves. Students getting from Pwani University to town, workers commuting from Mtondia, visitors heading to Bofa Beach — the boda stage is the real public transport network of the coast. But it runs on guesswork: no fixed prices, no way to know who's driving you, no record of the trip.

The big ride-hailing apps never made it here properly. Their prices assume Nairobi incomes, their maps assume Nairobi roads, and their support assumes you're not standing on a murram road with two bars of Safaricom signal.

So Boda Moja is the app the coast deserves: fares that fit Kilifi pockets, published openly — KES 50 base plus KES 30 per kilometre. Drivers who are verified neighbours, not strangers. M-Pesa built in from day one, because that's how Kenya pays. And an app light enough to run on the phones people actually own.

Boda Moja launches first in Kilifi Town, Mnarani and Bofa, with a founding group of local drivers. The rider and driver apps are built and in testing now, with M-Pesa payments running on Safaricom's Daraja platform.
